I got the evo and I luv it. The only thing I'm missing is instant notifications that my blackberry use to give me. I tried searching but couldn't get a concrete answer. So my understanding is that gmail is the only thing that pushes and
everything else is pulled? Like I can't get instant Facebook updates to my phone without manual refresh. Please someone school me on this. Thank you, and by the way this evo has to be the best phone ever made, PERIOD.

For mail the only true push you get I believe is thru gmail or activesync/exchange.

For all the other apps like twitter, facebook, etc you can set the refresh option to 1 hr or 30 minutes or something like that. I assume this would be a HUGE battery drain tho, so I set mine to manual.

so gmail and exchange are the only thing that "pushes"? everything else is snail mail?

You can try using Seven. Go to seven.com and clicknon the link for the beta program. I have used it successfully on the last several Winmo devices and it works well for free push email. They have an android client that works for the Evo (despite that it says it is for the G1) . I am going to download it myself later today.

I have a similar question. When I send an email to myself via Firefox on my laptop, the Gmail app on my EVO doesn't display a number "1" as in, 1 unread message. Is this normal?

When I actually click into the app, the new email is there, but should there be a number layered on top of the app to tell me how many unread messages I have?

Sorry for the noob question - coming from an iPhone, and loving my EVO.

You could also forward all other email (yahoo, msn, etc) to a gmail account to get push.

I dont know about Android (since I'm new) but with the iPhone I forwarded everything to my yahoo addy and created multiple email accounts so i can reply with different addys, etc. I'm sure there has to be something similar to Android OS.

Yes.

No.

There are several widgets in the Market that'll give you what you want. I like Gmail Unread Count, myself. It has plenty of icon choices and lets you rename the icon.
