Also what apps and settings are "mandatory" for longest battery life and best performance

Depending on which carrier you have, there are sometimes workshops that will walk you through the various features of your new device. I know Verizon has this service but can't say that I have ever attended or known anyone who has...

I always had my iPhone 3GS and 4 set at the brightest. My Note 2 and Note 4 are like at 1/4 brightness. These things are light bulbs and kill your battery at full brightness. Plus I turned off Auto for the brightness.
