Okay guys, I've tried to figure this out, but can't. About two days ago, my Nexus 6p decided it wanted to forget that I had music and ringtones on my phone.

The night before, I listened to music with no problems. My phone rang correctly as well. The only thing I did different was that I plugged the phone into an RV instead of my normal wall outlet back home.

I've checked for my songs and ringtones in the system. They are there. I even backed them all up on my computer, deleted them off of my phone, and moved them back.

I'm stumped. I've tried different music player apps, different ways for those apps to find the music, and have Googled. I don't know what else to try other than a factory reset, and I really don't want to do that.

Has anyone encountered this?

When you use a file explorer app on the phone you find all of that content in the Internal Memory -> Music folder?

And there's no file named '.nomedia' in that folder?

Screenshot of it currently. I saw no .nomedia file.

It routs through an emulated SD Card. Obviously, there isn't one as it's a Nexus. But, I can't figure out what's going on.

What File Explorer app are you using? I'm using Solid Explorer https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...s/details?id=pl.solidexplorer2&token=cGPtpfSa (there's a trial version IIRC) and this is what it shows

(Note that I don't happen to have any music downloaded ATM.)

I've been using ES File Explorer. On another note, I installed PowerAmp and it works, but I don't care for it. When it comes music players, I want the simplest one.

Also, I still haven't figured out ringtone issue. I put them in the Ringtone folder, like I always have, and the phone doesn't see them.

If it comes down to it, I'll factory reset, but I'd rather avoid it.

I'm actually having the exact same issue. All of my custom notifications have disappeared. I can't set them in any of the apps. Even Facebook lost it's default "POP"

I was also using ES File Explorer. But trying to move these around using Windows I'm having no luck. I know there wasn't a system update -but perhaps another app update broke this? It started for me about the same time as you.

I've moved files, deleted files, replaced them, and tried many different ways with no luck.

Yeah, I just tried removing ES File Explorer thinking it might be the culprit, but no luck. Really bizarre.

From the sounds of it... the mediaserver index is shot. The process that rebuilds it runs occasionally, but always runs on boot. "Turning it off and on again" seems like a silly resolution, but it is a resolution nonetheless. Give that a poke.

What could be going on is that the system indexes all the media on your phone and dumps it into a database. That way any app can subscribe to that database for a media file without having to go through the trouble of scanning the whole system. If that data is messed up, for whatever reason, an app will go to get a list of notifications and get nothing back... at which point it'll just shrug and pop a list of any built-in media files of its own.

No dice. I've cycled several times with no luck. I wonder if clearing the cache on the phone would do it?

You might be forced to resort to a factory reset to get things back in gear.

If you ARE going to FDR, this is worth a shot... clear the media storage manually... Settings > applications > Media Storage > clear data, force stop and reboot.

Now if THAT works, but only temporarily, the most likely culprit is a corrupted media file that the mediaserver is choking on and can't get past. That's a bit more pesky to clear.... try clearing the media storage first.

I'll give that a try tomorrow and add files back 10 at a time. It would definitely be better than a FDR. I've temporarily bypassed some of the problem by using PowerAmp, but I can't stand it.

That's very strange - Poweramp has no trouble finding your music but every other app you've tried doesn't?
Can you list a few that you normally use which aren't working now?
You're not running the N beta preview are you?

Not running the N Beta. I have to have a reliable device.

I normally use BlackPlayer for music. Also, Pi Music Player.

For ringtones I use Zedge and Ringtone Maker. Ringtone Maker sees my songs, but not the old ringtones. Zedge sees none of it.

Maybe Poweramp does its own media scan.

I just installed Solid File Explorer. It allows me to launch that when I choose a notification sound, and can select any sound. But then it just sets the sound to "None". :\
