help...losing half composed messages when screen goes off

It has happened to me twice now....please tell me how to prevent it:
Once while composing a long email and once while composing a post...both times i had typed long messages but got interupted before i could finish. I set my phone down....when i returned the screen had timed out and when i pushed the button on top to revive it my messages were GONE.....so frustrating! There must be a way to keep this from happening, right? What am i doing wrong?????

The email was not on the draft folder
The other thing i lost was a post here so a draft folder wouldnt be an option anyway.
I would love to know how to avoid this in the future.

Aha.....i bet thats it!
Yep, just changed the settings and tested it on this post and its fixed
