Hey!

I've been looking for a replacement phone, I was looking at the iPhone but quite frankly I think that AndroidOS has more room for expansion what with it being an open OS. Plus the two android phones I've picked are within my price range!

So the hunt for android phones began, I've narrowed it down to two phones now, the Samsung Nexus S and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play but I can't chose which one.

From what I've read they're very similar performance wise, but you can't be consumer opinion so can I get some opinions from owners?

As for what I'll be using these phones for? Well obviously general phone use, but also social networking, I plan to take full advantage of as many apps as possible and I do intend to game on it (Minecraft, N64oid).

Also;
Is there anything one can do that the other cant?
What is the camera like on the Xperia Play? Photo and video.

Thank you in advance!

Even though the Samsung is not out, the reviews of the Play are poor and to be honest i played with one as a games console its cool and a good handheld. However the games are expensive the camera is not fantastic and the slid out mechanism is for want of a word crap, it wobbles and feels very plasticy and cheap feeling. Oh and the buttons dont light up at night which means finding them is hard. That is my view of course. I recommend viewing them in store when the Nexus is out and seeing which is better

The Nexus S has been out since December 2010 :P

My vote went to the Nexus S.

Vanilla versions of Android (no manufacture overlaid UI) and will get updates faster than Play

The Play would be great for a hardcore gamer that would use the controller extensively.

I do not and have not owned either of these phones but from reviews that I have read the Nexus S is a very nice phone. The Play is a nice phone also but there are a lot of quirks that a gamer would gladly overlook to have the physical game controller.

Not much but I hope it helps in your decision.

I never understood why Sony went with the chipset with the weakest gpu for their gaming phone.

Adreno is not really weak, it's just not good in performance. Can't do things fast, but it can do them properly (Lighting and similar). Anyway, the Nexus S is one of the most updated phones in the Android World (Probably to 4.1, if 4.0.3 isn't that second update). It has vanilla Android, so it doesn't have bloatware like other phones, so you are safe in that department. It's also easy to hack. The Play is for heavy gaming, and it comes pre-loaded with MANY games, and most will come out for it first and then for other phones (An example is Minecraft). So pick what do you want to do. Addon: Xperia Play is updated by Sony Ericsson, so it's not going to be as fast as Nexus', but it's going to be pretty fast.

Neither.

Wait for Windows Phone 8 this fall.

If you aren't done playing with buggy Android junk though, then get the Nexus device. At least it isn't plagued with bloatware and crappy skins that make a buggy OS even worse and require rooting to remove.

The Nexus device is always going to be the lesser of two evils.

When you grow up and you're ready for a phone that's completely balanced and well thought out and 100% reliable, you know where to look and it's not the green robot.
