Do you have an unlocked boot loader? If you do, you can find some stickies in the forums on how to do manual updates.

If you have a Google account, you can back up your contacts and everything to the google account by setting it in accounts and sync. Unlocking the bootloader is pretty easy and instructions are in a sticky in the forums.

Hold on, if you're still on 4.0.2, you should double check WHICH version of software you have. Go to settings->about phone. Look for Takju, Yakju, or something similar. If it's something different and NOT Yakju or Takju, your software is NOT updated by Google. It is updated by Samsung, which means you will have to wait longer for updates. It is fairly easy to change this to Yakju or Takju, but I won't get into that here.

If your phone shows as Yakju or Takju, then yes, the update to 4.0.4 should be pushed out to you, and soon after that you should get 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean, the latest version of software). Keep hitting the Check for Updates button and sooner or later you'll get the update! Or you can take matters into your own hands and ROOT your phone, which allows you to run custom ROMS (customized versions of the operating system.

In the meantime, check out this link. Read it over a few times. This will help you understand what's involved in rooting your device.
