Help me understand NFC

Ok so I know NFC stand for near field communication but what does it actually do? I turn it off on every phone I get. I have it off now but I can still use Samsung pay. So what do I need it for??

Ok so for the most part I can leave it off and if I want to beam/transfer something then I can turn it on. I was surprised I could use Samsung pay with it off but it's been working

NFC is needed for Google pay, not for Samsung pay. Samsung pay uses MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission), reads the strip used to swipe a credit card.

Does NFC constantly scan for devices when on or only when prompted to, like activating google pay or beam transfer.

Im sure it can be more accurate if u keep it on and keep beam off until needed

If you use Samsung Pay, it turns on when you are making the transaction and then turns right back off when the transaction is done. Check for yourself. Activate Samsung Pay and pull down your notification tray. NFC will be on. Once you're done, it turns back off.

When using for Samsung pay or Google pay only when using that service but beaming can scan if you initiate it

Leave it off. Samsung Pay uses both MST & NFC, but it will turn NFC on & right back off after closing the app. I use SP religiously and have never turned NFC on.
