I have a stock ATT HOX that won't update. This is a replacement phone and has worked fine so I do plan on keeping it.
If I go to the Settings>ATT Software Update>Check for Updates; I then get to a window titled "My Account update" w/ text below that say's "Checking for new software available now" but then after it thinks for a minute it closes and goes right back to the Check for updates screen. At one time it would give a message that the software was up to date and I could check again in 24 hours.

I tried the Check in trick (*#*#checkin#*#*) and checked in successfully but that didn't allow me find the update either.

What's up? Am I missing something? How do I get the new update for my phone?:(

Have you connected to wi-fi? Mine did this after I looked for an update, but wasn't connected to wi-fi to download it. The new HOX update requires that you're either connected to a computer or connected to wi-fi. It may have detected the update and is just waiting for one of those two conditions. Then again, it should have come up with a notification saying as much, but you never know sometimes.

I checked last night. It found the update then went back to the check for update screen. I hit check for update again and it gave me the message that I can check again in 23:59. Then I got a message saying download interrupted try again later.

I went to bed and when I woke up it said it had the update ready to install. It installed normally after that.

Have you checked in the "Downloads" application? It may have downloaded and is waiting for you to click it over there.

Have you tried rebooting the phone? Sometimes, I run into issues like this and they get fixed up with just that one simple step.

The only other thing I can think of is that your area may not be slated for the update yet. Maybe wait a day or two and try again?

I have the same issue. My phone is rooted, so maybe that's affecting it.

OK I may have a solution but time will tell.

I got off the phone w/ ATT tech support who stated there was a email release from HTC to tech support about this update. There is a known issue w/ it that only some phones will encounter. The solution is to use HTC Sync manager (not HTC Sync...I didn't know we hat a new interface program and was still using HTC Sync ) Supposedly there is a link for ROM update that will load this update for us.

I was skeptical but am installing the software currently and will report my findings later today. It is discouraging that HTC released an update w/ a known install problem and I had to screw w/ my phone all day and finally get the truth from one of those painful calls to ATT tech support.

If this helps anyone great; I'll report back later.

My stock AT&T HOX has prompted me twice to update -- once before dawn (EDT) and again at a more reasonable hour. I answered the second prompt with the "yes, do it" choice. That put me in the Settings menu and nothing further happened. Since then I've tried the AT&T Software Update item: it shows me a "Check for updates" item. I tap that but nothing seems to happen. That is, I can feedback that I've tapped the item but there's no message or obvious activity. I've restarted the device, I've done this with the USB power cable plugged to my Mac (charge) and unplugged; and the device is connected to my home WIFI. I also rolled the date forward a few days. None of these changed the behavior I've described.

HTC Smartphones and Tablets - Support for HTC Cell Phones and Tablets
select HTC One X from the drop down menu and click GO
Look on the left side for the software updates link
read the link w/ specific intructions about dl the link that was released 8.2.12
Make sure to first have HTC sync manager installed (this is different than HTC sync).
dl the file and follow the on screen instructions.
I was cautioned to turn of my screen saver and adjust hibernation settings so nothing will interupt the install.
Oh yea, phone is connected to PC but the instructions covers this.
whole process takes about 10-15 minutes and the phone works better than before so the imho the factory reset is OK

i found it but i keep getting an error that the battery is below 30% which its not.. i dunno wtf the deal is.. i deleted the update and am trying to redownload it

ok i found that doing a full data reset helped , and the update popped right up to DL OTA.. i actually had to do the reset twice.. the DL file was corrupted when i did it the first time..
