help,newbie from Delaware

New to the android scene,coming from the iphone.Just bought a Dell Streak.It`s a locked att with 1.6.Everybody is complaining about the 1.6 software,buggy,etc,etc ,imparing the phone`s potential.
Att is not ready yet with the 2.2 upgrade.As usual,dragging there feet on this,anyway,the dell person told me to just go to the android site and download 2.2.I`m not a techie person unfortunately.Can somebody walk me thru this or should I just wait until Att has the 2.2.
