If all else fails you can flash the stock ROM via ODIN and get a fresh start.

data is on. what is apn settings?

here is what i have going on. this is an at&t gs3 on straight talk (ST). i rooted phone. was old version of android so i updated to 4.1.1. via stock rom in odin. now data dont work. i want to go back to ics to see if that helps. the stock ics i have is in .rar and wont run in odin. im not opposed to custom rom. i just need this to work

the mistake i made is not backing up before making changes.

No don't go back change the APN settings. Go to settings->more settings->mobile networks-> access point names-> click the plus button-> then put this.

Name:Straight Talk
Apn:tfdata
skip down to Mmsc
Mmsc:http://mms-tf.net
Mms proxy:mms3.tracfone.com
Mms port:80
