Help! Photos won't download over Wifi

I have a T-Mobile G3. Great phone, but I'm experiencing a strange issue. When I receive a text message with a photo attached, it won't download the photo unless I turn on mobile data. I have a strong wifi signal, and I don't recall having this issue with the S5 or the HTC One phones. Know I could just leave both wifi and data on, but it just seems like I should be able to download photos via wifi. Am I missing something? Thanks for the help.

I haven't had this problem since I had the G2x years ago. It wasn't an issue with the Nexus 4 and 5, but it's once again a problem with a G3. I can't remember if I ever fixed it or if it's fixable, so if someone could share am answer, that would be great.

You need mobile data on for MMS to work, SMS will work without mobile data but MMS needs it.

Photos over messaging is MMS, which requires mobile data (at least, if you're using the stock Messaging app). I'm not sure if T-Mobile's wi-fi calling features makes it possible to send photos over messaging on wi-fi, but on most other conventional phones, it requires mobile data.

Alright, the trick is disabling WiFi calling. Do that and you can send MMS when on WiFi. Just tested myself (turned WiFi calling preference to cellular data preferred).
