Hi,
I've just jumped ship from iOS to Android, and so far its been okay. I am using a Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, and I have a 64GB microSD card set up with all my music on it, and some video.
I am having an issue with playing music, and I'm unsure if it is something I'm doing, or if there is something wrong with my phone.
All of my music is in mp3 format; I don't have any other format of music. All of my music resides on the SD card, in a Folder I created called 'Music' (daring, I know). I used the app 'Android File Transfer' to access the card when it is connected to my MacBook Pro. I do not have access to a Windows machine.
When I try to play music using the default music app on the handset, about 80% of the songs flat out do not play. A further 18% play the first second or so, and then stops (it does not go on to play the next track). About 2% of the music I have will actually play. It also does not seem to follow any recognisable pattern for playing the next song - the next song could be from any album, with any song title - it just jumps to random songs. As far as I can tell, shuffle is not turned on.
I have tried storing some songs on the device's local storage, this has no effect. All of my music is ripped from CDs I own, so there are no DRM issues that I can think of. From any given album, say of ten songs, 8 of them will not play. There does not seem to be any pattern to how it chooses which songs are acceptable.
The device will display an error stating 'Sorry, the player does not support this type of audio file'. It does not provide any further information.
I have tried using different media players, and none of them work. Google Play also refuses to play the songs; however some songs that will not play in the default Samsung app will play in Google Play - even in Airplane mode. And the reverse is also true - a song that will not play in Google Play will play the Samsung app.
I have tried loading the music onto the SD card directly via a card reader, not through the phone; this creates hundreds of bizarrely named tracks, and does not resolve the main issue of songs not playing.
I'm unsure if this is related, but the device also will not play video that is stored on the SD card; I have to transfer the file onto the internal storage in order to watch the video.
I do hope someone will be kind enough to help. I do enjoy using the phone for reading ebooks and watching movies, but I'd love to be able to listen to music as well!
Any clarification needed, let me know.
Cheers,

Welcome to the forums. The player may have some kind of issue, you can try a third party player from Play. I like PowerAmp. It is a $4 app, but the free version is a two week trial period. I would suggest that. If that can't read it, there still may be a DRM issue.
This way you don't really spend any cash finding out it is a file discrepancy or not.

Sent from a Slim Tab 2.

Agree with above. I also like MortPlayer, since it's fairly basic (so there's no fancy stuff that might lead to incompatiblity) but still pretty versatile.

I wonder if Android File Transfer could be messing up the files. You could try a wireless file transfer app like AirDroid.

Thanks chaps.
I have tried MortPlayer - it looks like a lovely interface. I was able to open a few music files but as soon as I tried to open a file I know doesn't work in either other player, the app crashed. It now will not work at all. :( I will try WinAmp as well - I don't mind spending a bit if it means I can listen to my music.
I have tried using a Wireless sync app but gave up after it was taking so long to sync - but if I remember correctly, files brought on that way weren't working correctly either.
I think you may be on to something with the Android File Transfer app; it is very flaky and the wireless sync I tried said it had issues with the AFT app being installed.
I wonder if the USB cable might be faulty as well? I'll try using a different cable, too.
I am still confused by the random nature of playing songs - it follows no recognisable pattern. I just want to be able to listen to an album from beginning to end. Shouldn't be this hard!
Thanks again for your help - I'll report back when I make some headway.

Okay, I have tried Airdroid - what a lovely app!
I have ben able to transfer a large number of music files, and while there are still a large number of songs that throw errors, it does seem like there are a significantly higher number of working files. Yay!
So now I have to go through the entire song list of my music library, and test each song to see if it works, and then try to re-upload them. Boo
Oh well, I suppose there are worse things in life to deal with.
Thanks again for all your help gents, I appreciate it.
Cheers,
