Help with my first assault on Android?

Okay, so I'm getting my Epic 4G tomorrow. I've played with Android, but never owned it. I have zero intention of leaving it stock- that's just not how I roll :) Anyway, I've been lurking here, searching, etc but am still a bit lost because all the info I need seems to be scattered all over the interwebs and I'm struggling to piece it together properly. My plan is to install ACE mod since it looks to fit what I want the best and throw in a moderate overclock (as I understand Genocide kernel is included with ACE). Problem is I keep coming across so many posts about rooting, etc. that I've gotten confused as crap, so if someone could explain to me, or at least toss me some links to the process I need to go through to root the Epic, toss in Ace, etc, and have it up with minimum of fuss. How to back everything up if I need to revert it, blah blah you get the idea. I wanna get it right the first time and be rid of touchwiz, all the BS Sprint apps and bloatware, you get the idea, but I don't wanna have to spend the next 2 weeks repeatedly trying to get it right lol.

Thank's in advance, trying not to be overly noobish as this is usually second nature, but info on Android is so scattered and phone dependent that I figured it's better to ask and make sure I get the info right and get familiar with it before I have the phone.

Now, would you care to explain to me how the Hell I overlooked that sticky in the first place? /facepalm.

Thank's that looks to pretty much cover it.

Actually, one more question: as I understand for ACE I need to convert to EXT4 first correct?

clockworkmod should automatically do that for you the first time you go in to CWM.

Oh really? Nice! The whole process is a lot easier than I was expecting. Now tomorrow really feels like a long time away.

@bullfrog, all depends on what OS your Epic is shipped with.

I would hope that it comes with the official Froyo but I could be wrong since they pulled the official OTA update. Regardless of what OS it comes with, Eclair or Froyo if you want the easiest and most problem free method then I would suggest the following. Its a one stop shop, all in one package. You will have Froyo EB13, prerooted/CWM3.0.0.6 and EXT4 Filesystem all in one installation. Then all you will have to do is download your ROM of choice and flash it in CWM and your done.

Froyo EB13 Pre-Rooted, Deodexed, with Clockwork - RFS & EXT4

Choose the "Stock EB13 Deodexed EXT4 + CW 3.0.0.6" setup, and follow Ragnarokx's instructions to install. Any questions please feel free to ask in that thread.

Good luck and welcome to Android and The Samsung Epic 4g!

Ah, nice I'll probably go that route to cut out a few steps then. I doubt it'll Foyo if it's having that many issues they had to pull it, but hey you never know. Can't wait to get my hands dirty with Android.

@bullfrog- Paul and ragnarox are pretty much Epic geniuses lol. androidcentral is definitely the right place to come for help. i came here when i knew nothing.. and now, i may not be a dev, but i know pretty much all i need to know to be able to do all my own trouble shooting. thanks to Paul and Rag.

As I've been reading the forums, I've noticed that lol. Actually in a couple hours of reading here I feel like I know Android inside and out, despite having only used it for like 5 minutes total and not even having my phone yet. This place rocks

Haha, I ordered it online through Radio Shack, was waiting for delivery. Downloading rooting and ROM flashing materials right now. Managed to leave it stock for about 6 hours lol.

lol what ROM you go with? Your from crystal lake? Ive been seeing alot of people from around there area lately

ACE.
Yep, grew up there. Worked at the McHenry Meijer for a couple years. Just moved up to Madison about a month and a half ago. I noticed there's a lot of people from the area on here too. Odd.
