So currently I drive a 2006 Silverado ext cab, but I have a second child on the way. So I was looking at going to an SUV. I have looked at several different types, and I think that I have found one that I like. I am however interested in finding out a current owners feelings about their SUV's.

I am currently looking at the Nissan Xterra's, but I have also looked at the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

Nissan Xterra's are bad, bad news. I worked as a Used car salesman for 3 years 20-23yrs old. My entire family has been in the car business for ever. We even had our own lot. You have a toss up shot at not getting a LEMON. However if you don't get a lemon they are decent Suv's. The best advice I can give you, depending on your budget, is look at the Acura MDX. I used to sell these great SUV's. I drove one for a few weeks as a demo. and loved it. They're safe for your children, extremely roomy and stylish. They are pricey however I believe last year 06's were going anywhere from $22,000+. Acuras are made as strong as Mercedes, BMW even Audi's. Another SUV that is well made is Jeep Grand Cherokee's. Dodge/Jeep has given itself a bad name but that don't matter when I've heard nothing but good things about those trucks. If you need any more info i'm free to help. Also as a salesman, don't ever walk into a place and buy the car that same day unless you are absolutely positive that's the best deal you're getting.

i would avoid the nissan

i am very biased in favor of american autos. i really want to support our manufacturing base because without it we will falter as a country. on the other hand as a consumer you want what works best for you, and the best bang for your buck. there are plenty of good automobiles out there (both foreign and domestic)

are you looking new or used, what is your price range?

Having had the Xterra ('04 Supercharged), it was nice, but I would stay away. I currently have an '06 Trailblazer I picked up for rather cheap and low miles and its much, much better. Has more cojones than the Xterra and gets better gas milage. Plus I personally think it was more spacious (although the newer Xterras are probably bigger). The interior won't last. The cheap plastic on the inside faded in like a year. The 4.2L Straight 6 in the Trailblazer is probably one of GM's most reliable engines. Absolutely phenomenal. I would pick up a newer one in a couple of years.... but it is no more. I also really liked my friend's Tahoe, but you're looking at V8, bigger and a bigger hit at the pump, plus they are significantly more expensive, even for used of the same year.
Honestly I don't have an opinion on the Jeep, never been in one, except some super nice diesel turbo that a friend of mine borrowed one night from his parents. It was really nice, but not necessary.
