Hey there I literallly got this phone last night and am trying to root it and all the videos say use motochopper but I always get failure press enter to reboot. I press enter it reboots I have super user app installed but I downloaded root checker and it says I don't have a proper root installed. I hav enabled developer options and set it to on and checked the USB debuging. ANy help is appreciated thank you

edit: so I found a guide and rooted with odin 3 and now it passes. I read on a another thread saying you can only use odin custom roms now is this true? and wht is the best rom to use to clean up this bloat ware make it look better and improve the camera

I was thinking cyanogenmod will this one work?

The problem you were encountering was probably something simple. I've noticed that if you have verify apps checked in your security menu it won't let the SuperSu binary install correctly. And you also have to go in and manually update the SuperSU binary before rebooting and flashing back the stock kernel. And as to your second question: Nobody packs rom into Odin flashable tar files anymore. Only for factory images do they do that. Every rom that you will see will be in zip format and you will flash it in recovery. Also, just about any custom rom that you flash will be considerably debloated compared to the stock rom. Most developers remove all the useless junk apps to make their rom as slim as possible. If you really don't like the Touchwiz stock camera then any AOSP rom or Hybrid AOSP rom will have a different camera. The stock 4.2.2 camera. Personally I prefer the Touchwiz camera. But if your looking for a different camera then I would recommend PacMan rom, or Paranoid Android. They are AOSP based roms and full of features.

Ah okay. So your sucessfully rooted now. Have you installed a custom recovery yet? You can't flash anything until you have a Loki modified recovery.

I doubt I installed a custom recovery yet cuz I dont no what that is lol I basically rooted, downloaded a couple of apps and put some books on it thats it.... I am debating pacman or cyanogen am I able to flash these even tho i used odin to root or am i stuck with the stock?

thanks kinda confused Ive had an iphone for the last 3 years lol

Haha, it's all good man. It was confusing as hell for me at first too. You just have to do alot of reading. So you have a Canadian AT&T S4 right?
No your not stuck with stock. Normally on a device, you would need root, custom recovery, and an unlocked bootloader to flash a custom rom. On the Qualcomm US variants of the S4 there is no bootloader unlock method yet so what we have is a bootloader "workaround" called Loki that's built into our custom recovery. Recovery for Android is like recovery for Windows, where you can wipe your device, recover your device, or install other software. It kicks in before Android starts running. But in order to get to recovery mode on Android you have to shut the phone off. Then just like booting into Odin mode you hold Volume up+home+power and it will boot into recovery. Try it out. Don't worry you can't hurt anything unless you accidentally hit the wipe data option. lol.
First off, what is the model and build numbers for your device?
EDIT: Also, read this; What are custom recoveries for Android? | PhoneDog
it's kinda a short description on what custom recovery can do for you.

I guess it an AT&T, it is canadian and the SGH-I337M. So my phone is rooted now, and i guess i have custom recovery... i went into that mode with the 3 buttons is there anything else i need to do for that? And for a unlocked bootloader I don't need to use Loki becasue its not a US phone? The model of my phone is SGH-I337M and build number is JDQ39.I337MVLUAMG1. Im kind of confused about where to go from here I guess unlocked bootloader, Rom and then anything in particular I need. Also what rom do you recommend if youve tried either cyanogenmod or pacman, im debating but have no clue lol.

Thanks for all the help

will flashing a r om erase my phone?

I337M has unlocked bootloader.

If you're flashing to any ROM from stock, you'll need to wipe everything before flashing.

There are a lot of informative threads on xda-developers forum to assist with how-to and inquiries.

Titanium Backup can help with backing up your apps and files.
Flashing back to stock is possible but uses a different method to do so rather than CWM or TWRP recovery; Odin.
Custom ROM can only update with that specific ROM's updates.
Tons to read over at xda. ;)
