Hi everyone.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4, a Nexus 7 2012 and an ASUS MemoPad HD7.

Just wondering why certain devices only upgrade to certain versions of Android?

My Nexus 7 and Galaxy phone have upgraded to KitKat but my ASUS MemoPad is still using Jelly Bean.

Why?

TIA.

Welcome to the forums.
Some of it depends on who made the device. The Nexus line will always get OS updates quickly. Flagship devices will typically get them, the question is when, and devices that are not mainstream, the possibility of getting the OS is questionable.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Makes sense (kind of). :-)
Adding to that, Manufacturers oftentimes have many devices to update. Since not all devices include the same hardware, it's pretty much a build, test then test some more kind of situation for each phone a manufacture makes. Also, there is a lot of time testing with the carriers before an update is even released.

As mentioned by Golfdriver, the beauty with Nexus devices is that those are updated fairly quick and direct by Google. There's still that layer of carrier review, but it doesn't seem to delay the update release.

By the way, welcome to Android Central and enjoy the forums!
