I'm a cellphone/smartphone/PDA user from way back. My first foray into the market was a cellphone came in its own luggage (like this one, 1990)
and a Handspring Visor (Palm OS)
. After holding onto my Kyocera smartphone (also Palm OS)
until it turned into powder in my purse, I switched to a BlackBerry Curve
and then my current combo of a Playbook and Bold
.
I use my tech for to build and expand relationships (business and personal), to track business and current events, to keep track of customers and projects, to read (I've had a Kindle since launch and currently use a Fire for reading, video, shopping and tracking the work of my grad students) and for work on my doctorate (sleep is just practice for being dead, y'all). Between Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Plaxo I have something like 6000 contacts and I'm pretty chatty on e-social media (remembering that a coffee shop is a social medium...and so is pen and paper). My current BlackBerry setup just doesn't work any more. Truth to tell, it never quite did what I'd hoped it would, but I kept hanging onto the mantra of "next OS update--promise!"
When I realized that I was spending more time on Crackberry.com trying to figure out how to make my phone/PlayBook work than celebrating my tech and learning cool, new things about what I could do with it, it dawned on me...Over in BlackBerry world, it has become an exercise, frankly, in loyalty over results.
I'm either going to get the S III or the Note II to replace both the phone and the Playbook (takes up less real estate in the purse). Here's what I think I can get: faster/more powerful processor, clearer screen, no outages (BlackBerry, you really hurt yourself here), more commitment to innovation, and a more stable company.
Sad.
So, I need to figure out how to synch with Outlook calendars and contacts (my email addy is my company address and I won't use a gmail addy for company email or Google's calendar--I deal in sensitive information as a high-level executive coach and business consultant)...and the host of things I don't know that I don't know.
Forgive my awkward comments and questions. I'm trying to switch a whole world of thinking.
Best,
Lalita
