I'm always quite interested in phones which can also record in loud environments. I think it's definitely a an underrated feature. I have to say though, these 2 examples are highly disappointing. It doesn't even come close to the Nokia 808, which in my opinion still is the gold standard for audio recording. It's crazy phones from 2012 still beats any phone these days for audio recording.

This is just another area where the "smart device" lacks in structure and substance. One must realize that a smart device like a cell phone wasn't intended on bing used for what you wanted it to be. In this case and because of the low quality nearly inferior lenses and mic installed within your device.. you really can't expect much more than you you just presented..

However and to look at this from a creative point of view.. I would suggested that you incorporate several smart devices and a better audio recording system.. Record the footage on all devices and localize the audio within range of the subject for a video sound bite or feed which you would then integrate into the multiple footage view a video editing program. So if you've ever wondered how the pros do it.. I just told you.

I'm not an audiophile, but both sound better than any concert recording I've done.

I do agree with you some of those Nokia phones were greatly under appreciated. I'm sure that camera on the 808 is amazing too. I personally had the N91, N95 & the N8. Unfortunately, the Symbian operating system couldn't keep up with Android & iOS. As for the sound quality from those videos, I wouldn't take it seriously at all. You really can't put the blame on the phone when it's an operator/user error. The sound is a little raw, they intentionally left the sound isolation to the user. There's a reason they gave you an interface so you can isolate the frequences.

1. That doesn't sound too bad.
2. Do we have any idea how the mics were set up on the manual camera controls? Were they even shot in manual mode?

Comparing to other devices is best. Need a control to reference or no point. The actual acoustics of source matters as well (duh).

Not seeing any basis for any conclusion, since as is, way too subjective.
