Higher Quality Contact Photos for Google and Android OS

Any way to either set higher quality photos from the phone itself or within Google contacts? It looks like Android is trying to blow up low quality Google avatars.

The only way I've been able to do it is to link the contacts to the phone and not Google.

How do I do that?

You'll need to delete the contact and then add the contact again. Below the name it has contact type, choose phone instead of Google. The contacts that you do this to will no longer be synced with Google so you will need to back them up some how incase something happens to your phone.
