To me, this is the single best feature of the One and makes up for many other shortcomings with the device.

Has anyone tried to make a highlights clip with pics not taken on the One? For example, can pics in a Dropbox folder be assembled into a highlights clip?

Yes they work as normal with other photos as long as the orientation is right.

I dont see how to do it. I can view photos in my Dropbox folder within the Gallery but dont see an option to add it to Highlights. Just the sharing options.

I think they need to be moved to the phone first. In fact I'm pretty sure of this. But I agree, highlight videos are probably the feature HTC should be pushing. Anyone who asks me what my phone does special I just show them a highlight and how it takes no effort to make one.

Yeah, I just did this this weekend. I don't remember exactly how I got it to work. The photos were in flickr. From within the flickr app I downloaded the pics. I think I used "merge to" to get the pictures in the proper event.

I just re-read Phil's article on this and he called out HTC for marketing Zoe's when in fact it's the Highlight feature that is most impressive and not marketed as such.

Apparently IT IS possible if you care to read thru the thread. It's not that I want to "highlight Dropbox". I'm interested in using HTC's awesome Highlights feature to bring to life photos taken prior to my life with the One.

You just need to download the photos to your phone and merge them into an event. This will create an individual folder which becomes an event which is the easiest way to make highlights. I hope that answers your question.

This should be a STICKY.

In case you didn't know there were other phones with cameras that people took photos with before this phone. Importing those photos from dropbox and making a highlight is something that is appealing to many people and is very possible.

Grab a brown paper bag. Go sit in the corner. Breathe into brown paper bag until you stop hyperventiliating over somebody's thoughts about the phone. He asked a legitimate question that could perhaps be helpful to many people. Get over it and find something in this world more important to whine about.

I agree that highlights are great, but on that same note, when they ask you if you can put the pics you want highlights to highlight then thats when you have to give them the workaround..Workarounds are never good for advertising! We trluy have no control over what our phones Highlight (out the box) unless we create a folder and add only the pics we want to that folder......NOT COOL, especially when it looks like we can pick the pics (but we really can't) when in the original event folder! The feature sorely needs an update!! For me, the best features of this phone are that it just works...there's no stutter, no lag, no constant resets, awesome screen, integrated Beats and front speakers..AWESOME.. Zoes and highlights are respectable, but IMHO...the user needs much more control over highlights and we need the option to create a longer highlight...without having to add apps to splice videos together and doing workarounds. You can't make a selling point out of something that's not really finished because if people buy in and truly see it's limitations, then the phone will lose it's footing. HTC needs updates to the highlight feature and the camera. I believe Ultrapixels work, but I also believe the software managemet needs work.

So, you ask why not advertise more anyways right? Samsung advertises air gestures and eye scroll on a very laggy phone that also doesn't live up to expectations...True! But, it's Samsung and they've already carved out there market and to some degree the SGS4 followers/users love their devices just like Iphone users love their devices. They are loyal! HTC users don't have that loyalty. HTC has had too much negative publicity from poor pedigree and how they manage their software and updates. So, they can not just advertise wonky stuff until they truly get it right! We need updates to this phone and we knew that when we purchased it! The ball is in HTC's court to show us that they will get it done! Because, if they don't update their devices, polish the highlight feature, and update the ultrapixel camera with better management of high contrast scenes then this will be the last best HTC phone we will get or even want to buy. As an early adopter, I love my ONE, but I don't want advertising money to take away from polishing off such an awesome phone.

Apple advertises rock solid features that people can just identify with. That's why they are winning! Samsung is bombarding us with ads to make us think we are missing out on something.... I'm hoping that HTC is using the philosphy that LESS IS MORE! We will know our destinies with our choice if our updates start flowing soon, then our phones can truly be bragged about and advertised for their supreme advantages over the competition!!

Until then enjoy your phone folks, it's beautiful and loaded with potential!!

Glad to have helped. Now if only the phone would stop making my download folder an event every time I save a picture my friends send me. The event goes to the top of the events list since it's the most recently made. This is an honest annoyance for me but nothing too bad.

Edit: Oh, and I want 45 and 60 second highlights as well. I don't know if we'll get this and I don't think I need longer than that but a little flexibility in video length would go a long way to make highlights even better than they are. I'd love to make a highlight from my vacation I just went on but 30 seconds doesn't really allow for a complete showing like I'd want. We can all dream.

In my original rant, i said that "anything can be worked around!" I admit i lost my cool, but i didn't like the OPs thread starter, partcularly his caveat about "many other shortcomings!" For me, that was inciteful! Obviously! so, i felt a need to respond. However, i did clear up my statement with a bit more lengthy post!

all phones have a few shortcomings. I have the One and GS4 and they both have several shortcomings. He didn't anywhere state that it is a bad device. I think we all know what his preference is but I don't think that his original post in this thread was meant to bash the One.

As for making highlights from dropbox photos. I don't see it as a workaround. The highlight feature isn't just meant to work with photos taken on this device. Obviously, the phone will only automatically compose highlights based on the photos that are in your daily event folder but it is easy enough to import photos from any source and create a highlight. Like said in other posts, I really wish HTC would market this feature more. Having young kids it is a huge selling point for me over the GS4 although the GS4 camera is more to my liking. But in the end I find myself still using the HTC camera more due to the speed and HTC features.

From Phil's excellent article on the subject:

"But the message itself is a little confusing. Zoe is part of the Holy Trinity of HTC One, alongside BoomSound and BlinkFeed. In our retail version of the HTC One, it's printed on the protective wrapping of the phone. BlinkFeed, BoomSound, Zoe. But a Zoe is just one part of the experience here. Video Highlights are a big deal. But a Video Highlight isn't a Zoe. We imagine conversations like the following:

"How do I make a Zoe?"
Answer: "Tap the Zoe button, then the shutter button. Now you have a 3-second Zoe."
"No, I don't mean that. I mean the thing with the music and the effects. That's not a Zoe?"

No. It's not a Zoe. It's a Video Highlight."
