Ho do I switch carriers and phones?

Hi! I currently have a Samsung Galaxy 5 with AT&T and I just got a new unlocked phone in the mail, which I plan to take to T-Mobile to set up.

I have not opened up the new phone. I don't have a SIM card either.

I have no idea how this process works. Do I cancel AT&T service before taking to T-Mobile?

I want to keep my same cell phone number too if possible.

Do Not cancel att until you have ported your number or you will lose it. Go to the new carrier first.

Bring the new phone to T-Mobile. Remember to bring your last AT&T bill with you (for the account information). T-Mobile will set you up.
