Home screen blank, Alarm didn't go off

Last night I turned my alarm on for 9:30 as normal. I woke up on my own around 11. When I turned my phone screen on there were no apps on my home screen and then I got flooded with text messages. It was like the phone had gone into standby mode. What might've caused this? I kinda need to know my alarm isn't going to mess up on me regularly.
