Homescreen icons disappearing when Google Now Launcher updates

My mom uses a Wifi Nvidia Shield Tablet. She installed Google Now Launcher on it. She had been happily using the tablet until about a month ago when Google Now Launcher updated. Her app icons on her home screens disappear. Every time Google Now Launcher updates, she is asked to choose a launcher (she chooses Google) and is met with the stock icon configuration of the tablet. Does anyone know what is causing the icons to disappear and how this can be prevented? I have installed Google Now Launcher on all my devices and also on her Galaxy S6 and have never encountered this error. Any insight would be appreciated.

That might be some bug specific to the Shield. If your mother selects the Google Now Launcher to be the default launcher, can she go to Settings>Apps>All, select the stock launcher, and Disable it? That way, she wouldn't have to keep selecting Google Now Launcher to be the default, and if this is triggering the loss of icons, then it might bypass the issue.
