Ok gingerbread doesn't look so tasty after this drop. So I'm ready for a bigger splash with HoneyComb!

As I stated in another post, if you were looking for some ground breaking flashy stuff, prepare to be disappointed. While I'm sure there will be some nice UI changes that we haven't been able to see yet, there will no doubt be some big changes to how Android works. That's much more important than any flashy stuff.

Gingerbread was never meant to be anything all that groundbreaking. A LOT of under the hood changes, which is actually a good thing.

Thats why I really dont think we should all be to excited for this. The average user won't notice much of a difference. This is for the developers and ROM people. What I am hoping for in this is that the EVO will get it and we will see the new Since UI come with it.

yeah maybe one day people will stop being taken in by the hype.. It's the same with EVERYTHING.. new iOS, new Android, new OS X, new Windows, new Linux (ok no one's hyping that anymore), new boyband, new movie, new cereals, new new... etc

I think Rubin's demo at all things D pretty much guaranteed it's 3.0.

I started a thread about the Moto tablet and Honeycomb in the Tablet forum. I posted some of what I saw in Rubin's demo.

I love the look of Honeycomb so far. In fact, I'm surprised how much he showed, especially since it the official day they announced Gingerbread.

Here's what I saw:

- New unlock screen

This looks very nice. I like the swipe in any direction. It's very minimalistic. Very cool.​

- Task switcher

One of the lacks that I've always felt Android has is a good Alt-Tab-like solution for switching between open apps. I'm happy to see something that looked like that to me.​

- Multi-paned apps.

This was kind of a given for a tablet, but it's nice to see its inclusion.​

- Soft buttons

Having a tablet not have a right way up is kind of cool. I really liked how the home, back, menu, search buttons moved with the screen.​

really appreciate all the info everyone but does this mean that i should continue to wait before i purchase my first android device? i mean i know that there's always going to be a new update coming and all that but i would at least like to know that the phone i get wont be obsolete when i get it or shortly after because it can't be updated.

As long as you buy a top-end Android device it will continue to get updates, at least for a while. Then, if you feel comfortable enough to do it, you can root and install custom ROMs that offer you the chance to continually update your phone. Their is no danger of obsolescence if you're willing to root. Even the G1 can have Froyo.

I have had the Evo since launch day and fully expect Gingerbread to be rolled out to it but I'm really more interested to see if the Evo will merit, in Sprint's eyes, Honeycomb. If the Evo gets 3.0 I'm guessing that will be about the end of the road for it.

Android 2.2 is very polished as is. You definitely won't be sorry.

Discussion about honeycomb is making me wish it were close to launch right now. This is going one nice UI to navigate on. Google's rapid innovation and updating is great and I can only imagine what they have in store for the future. Eventually their updates will become fewer and far between but at that point they will have something that will be setting the bar for others (even more then they are right now).

Though this thread is great, it does not belong in the gingerbread section. I'll move it to the right section.

I have full Android 2.3.1 Gingerbread running on my Droid 1.

Some things I noticed were it's very fast, no lag, no launcher widget redraws, when you hit the top and bottom of a menu, it does an orange glow effect.

Slide to unlock looks different, as does the security unlock dots. The launcher by default is the 3G sliding drawer one you see on the N1. Everything's green color.

When you have a clean connection to google services, the 3G/Wifi logos will turn green.. if you don't have a good connection, they turn grey. If you're on 3G, they should pretty much always be green.. but when on wifi, if you have any firewall blocks to any google service, it'll turn grey.

All in all, I cant wait for it to hit other devices.. It's a nice refresh.

They are codenames Google gives it's unreleased Android OS's. All start with a letter of the alphabet, c, d, e, f, g, h.. etc

Started with Cupcake

1.5 = Cupcake
1.6 = Donut
2.1 = Eclair
2.2 = FroYo (Frozen Yogurt)
2.3 = Gingerbread
#.# = Honeycomb
#.# = Icecream (maybe?)

etc etc..
