I was told that Nova Launcher could auto-rotate the home screen to horizontal, but it isn't working for me.. Any other suggestions? Are there any other steps have to go through to allow this feature?

I bought a mini keyboard case, and it's really inconvenient to have a vertical-only home screen. I just got my tablet today, and I want to hold off on rooting it.

Ultimate Rotation Control has 7 day trial

force auto rotate, lock orientation, per application settings, etc

Screen Orientation Control (free)

This is very simplistic. You lock the screen in Landscape or Portrait (doesn't force auto). (put the Nexus 7 default rotation setting to lock first). So if you want something free, this can be helpful if you know your going to use it in Landscape for a while.

Both app settings are accessible from the pull down.

Nova Launcher definitely allows landscape on the home screen, even on the free version. You have to turn it on in Nova Settings > Look and Feel > Screen Orientation (I have it set on Auto Rotate).

Found that to work much better for me than Ultimate Rotation Control.

I second the use of Ultimate Rotation Control. Worked well enough that I bought the license and have been using it for a couple of weeks without issue. Be aware that it will let some programs that are designed to start in landscape to start in portrait and they don't look right. For those apps I used Ultimate Rotation Control's per app settings to force them start to start in landscape.
