Horrible speeds or defective radio?

I am in a market soon to be LTE so that might be the problem but I dunno. Lately, I have only gotten 1X data speeds at best, and even then it doesnt seem to connect 1/2 the time at all for any data.

I used to get 3G (albeit not that fast) most of the time with little signal dropouts. Could my phone have gone defective or is it just horrible data speeds in Houston right now? It's been this way the last few days. I dunno if running a custom rom could also effect connection issues, but I was having better luck with connection speed before I unlocked my phone.

I love the screen/speed of this phone, but I kinda regret leaving my EVO 3D, at least I could consistently get a 3G signal on it.

It could be due to the imminent launch of LTE. The network vision project that Sprint is doing on the towers requires them to take towers down or shut them down to do work on them. They might just be working on the towers close to you causing the issues. Is your signal bad in only certain areas or everywhere?

Im in Dallas, a soon to be LTE market.
I experienced the same issues. At work normal slow.
Went to Chipotle and couldnt use foursquare because i had such a slow connection. I have used my device at this location many times and even had 800k to 1meg down before. But while i did a speed test yesterday i got 10k down. My guess is they were working on the tower in the area.
As soon as i got home i had 1.5megs down on 3G before i went to WiFi.
Best thing to do is find a few key spots where you KNOW your device has good 3G speeds. When in doubt test there.

My device no longer gets decent 3G anywhere. It used to get good speeds at home during the late evening/early morning, but not anymore. It doesn't have any data connection half the time unless I select wi-fi.

I might try going back to my prior rom to see if that is part of the issue.

I "speed test" 3G actually tethered to a laptop like a Data Card or MiFi connection, NOT the mobile app. Try easytether it's a free app.


EVO tethered to my laptop just after 2pm local time.

I called Sprint Today and they reset my activation on the Phone. Basically some # # codes to type in. So far it hasn't lost 3G like it had been before. The real test will be tomorrow when I'm driving around. That will hopefully be the fix. My speeds weren't great But at least it's no longer disconnecting. I'll let y'all know. In Houston Too.

My friend..This has nothing to do with the upgrades in the Houston area or LTE rollout. I confirmed this with a store technician and many of the "NV" upgrades to 3g have been done in Houston already. Our problems here is just what the tech told me that there are WAYYYYYY too many people who have Sprint in the Houston area on 3g and that the only thing to wish for is usuable LTE. Even he is fed up with all the complaints because they are normally directed to the store for false fixes. The sad thing is that I don't think that Sprint has the resources to pull off a true network upgrade and continue to meet demands elswhere such as the iphones 20 billion promise when they are virtually a bankrupt company.To give you a clear example test your phone's speed at 5am and you will notice a significant increase in data speeds. As soon as people start waking up around 0630-0700 those speeds are right back diminished to dial-up level speeds and lower.

FYI, Ive had several instances of horrible speed and my device showed 3G but my Signal Widget showed 1x. Its happened several times. So this could be to blame. To me it looks like the device will switch to 1x and have issues with going back to 3G.

I had an issue where my PREVIOUS phone (Evo 3D) was getting horrible (under 150KB/s always) speeds. It turned out it was stuck in 2G mode all the time, even though it would indicate 3G. After suffering with it for a month, I FINALLY called Sprint and they repartitioned it and re-setup the data stuff and WHAM, huge difference.

The LTE network has nothing to do with the 3G network, just like it had nothing to do with the Wimax network. They are different radios in the phone sending and receiving data on a totally different spectrum. I guarantee you that once the LTE network is up, your 3G speeds will not improve. Not until Sprint fixes their 3G network will the slow speeds go away.

That is not exactly accurate, according to Sprint. At the same time Sprint is preparing towers for LTE, they are also upgrading the 3G network and backhaul connections. So it is quite likely that the 3G network in LTE areas will significantly improve in speed/capacity/coverage. That is part of Sprint's "Network Vision" plan.
