hotword detection twice in a row?

so i just got my nexus 7 -- playing around with google now -- amazed at the
voice recognition...

...i have a question about hotword detection... here's what i don't understand
about it... why isn't the screen it takes me to also allow hotword detection?

like if i search for something then get results, i have to click to choose a result
and if i ask it a question and get an answer, i can't ask another one right away,
i have to click the mic now...

...seems weird to me... is this just the way it is? or can i get the behavior i want
by changing a setting somewhere?

also is there a comprehensive list of google now commands somewhere?

I just swipe up from the bottom of the screen and it takes you to that search screen and then you can say 'Google' to make it listen. Then if you want, just swipe up again.
