How are system apps updated?

How are system apps updated (like Gallery, Music, Samsung Link etc.) ? Is it automatic and is there any user control or notification about this activity?
(I understand how Play store and 3rd party apps update is controlled)

Some of the system apps are uploaded through the play store, others would be updated through an OTA update

Systems apps that aren't Google's are typically updated OTA. You will get notifications that an update is available to download. Also, if you know there is an update out there (because people here or your friends are getting theirs) you can check for notifications as well and if the carrier is ready to push to your device, it'll show up.
