How best to compress grid size?

What is the best way (read: most simplistic) to compress the grid size? I'm thinking at least 6-by or 7-by... I assume any number of launcher will do this, yes? Is there any loss of functionality in doing so? Thanks in advance.

NOVA, ADW, APEX all have that functionlaity. I don't believe you will loose much but you should be able to try them out and see what happens.
