How can I allow a timer to sound in silent mode?

I would like to have a timer make an alarm sound when it is completed, but I still want the phone to be in silent mode. I know I can put the phone in do-not-disturb mode and set an exception, but I'd like to just have the phone in silent mode and still hear a notification sound when the timer is complete. Is there any way to do this? I have Lollipop 5.1.1

Silent mode is what it says, silent. As you say the dnd function can do this
