How can I check if my HTC One M8 is refurbished?

The only time you should expect a refurbished phone is if you did a warranty exchange or specifically bought a "certified like new" (or similarly named) phone. If you bought it at full retail price, or when opening/upgrading a line with a carrier, it should be truly new.

There may be a way to check the ESN with HTC or something if you're in doubt, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

I am worried about this too. I have to replace my phone, power button sticks, and I know the AT&T repair center usually replaces phones with refurbished ones.

Don't be worried. There is a 100% face your phone IS refurbished.

I deal with HTC directly and they repaired my mic free of charge. I prefer this over a carrier supplied Refurbished device.
