how can i get my noification alert to go away after I have read my notification

My Emergency Alerts and my Facebook apps show I have messages. I have already read and deleted these messages, yet the notification still remains.

Do you mean the read counter? If so, it might be a bug with your launcher, not the app. Have you tried re-booting your phone? Or are you using a 3rd party launcher?
