How can I get my Verizon Note 3 connect as media device NOT installer?

How can I get my Verizon Note 3 connect as media device NOT installer? It used to connect as installer for a few seconds and then connect as media device. Now it connects as installer every time and every time I need to go into notifications and switch it back. It used to be that you could specify how you wanted to connect, however, even though I'm still on KitKat, what was once an option you could set, it is no more. I'm rooted, so if you have an idea how to force it to connect as media device, I'm all ears.
