How Can I Restore KitKat 4.4 To My Optimus L90 From Lollipop

Trying to help an elderly family member use his phone when he upgraded it to Lollipop without knowing what he was doing. He says the phone is way too confusing now and after looking at it, it's pretty slow and a bunch of the apps don't work. How can I roll the phone back to KitKat 4.4?

Also, as the original submitter under an unregistered account, is TowelRoot a legitimate way of going back to KitKat 4.4? (Legitimate meaning working, not meaning supported by LG)

No, towqel root roots (installs a file named su) on 4.4.2. It won't work on Lollipop. You'll have to get one of the LG flashing tools (I prefer LG Flash Tool to the LG Mobile Support Tool), the .dll file for your phone and a .tot file for your phone for 4.4.2. Back up any data he doesn't want to lose (see Backing up an Android Device) then flash the ROM. Look on the L90 forums on XDA Forums if you need more help.

Then run Towel Root to root the ROM and disable the updater app (you'll have to ask on XDA for the name LG uses for that app), otherwise it'll keep trying to update and keep failing (updates are supposed to fail on rooted phones, because it's dangerous to update a rooted phone) and it'll really drive him crazy..
