Hello

How can I stop my (Samsung) Camera app from closing every c. 2 minutes?

Background
I am trying to take videos using a tripod, and I have discovered the "Video Pro" mode, which gives a lot of extra features (including being able to see which microphone(s) are connected and changing it if required).

BUT it keeps kicking me out every c.2 minutes, back to the home screen (I think). This is extremely irritating because each time it kicks me out it forgets what my zoom setting was.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

J

PS I have set the screen not to close for 10 minutes, so that's not the issue.

Are you actively recording? If not, the camera app is hard-coded to close in that time and cannot be changed. You can, however, set the 'Settings to Keep' in the camera Settings so that you can return to where you were before it timed out. If it's stopping while recording, I'd make sure you're using a suitable video resolution and that you have enough storage left.

No, it is kicking me out in between recording sessions.

It is deeply irritating of "Big Brother" Samsung to have hard-coded this setting, if that's what they've really done.

Either way, I can't find any way to go back to my previous zoom setting that I set within Pro Video mode.

Problem isn't time-out of the screen; the app itself closes after a hard-coded-and-cannot-be-changed period of inactivity/recording.

A 2-minute timeout may suffice for taking selfies, but as any professional can tell you, when you are trying to shoot some video in any remotely serious way, a 2-minute timeout that resets your zoom is TOTALLY insufficient. [GRRRR!]

Samsung has obviously failed to do user trials with any serious users.

Anyone here know how and where we complain?

Im having the same problem and made this account to hopefully share a possible solution. Instead of leaving your phone open on tripod set your camera up and close the phone so the timeout doesn't happen. If you set your settings appropriately you can open your phone with the remote and it opens to the camera as you left it. I hope this works.

I also find this annoying on my S20 FE.

It doesn't seem to have a Camera Timeout setting as mentioned above.

Device interfaces keep getting worse. Stripping away and hiding features and settings.

As this is a long thread, I'll summarize:

Original question: how to prevent camera switching off after x time when unused, and phone reverting to start screen.
The issue is that this is hardwired in the phone and not a setting you can change.
Somebody suggested the Samsung app Camera Assistant as a solution. Not to change the time the camera closes - as that can't be done - but to use it to ensure the settings are not set back to default when it happens.

I also couldn't find the Camera Assistant when I searched for it at first. Then I tried googling 'can't find camera assistant in samsung store'. It took me to a page on the Samsung site (support > solutions) 'How do I use Camera Assisant on my Galaxy S23 Ultra'. That contained a direct link to the app in Samsung Store.
Once found, I couldn't reproduce the error why it wouldn't have come up in the first place.

Haven't looked at the assistant or the settings, but offering this as a next step in the total problem solving process. @ship69, I hope this helps :)

Made an account to say this. You have to go to the galaxy store, then download an app called "good lock". Then, in good lock, scroll around until you find camera assistant.

In camera assistant, scroll down to camera timeout and set to 10 mins.. Which is as long as itll let you set it.

I happened to have good lock to use sound assistant and theme park in the past. So much agony for standard users though. You have to know this stuff exists to even make use of it.

Why can't we search in good lock. Why does Scamsung include an uncontrollable timeout? Why did I have to find this out with a 450°C soldering iron in my hand as my phone kept booting me out of my perfectly zoomed camera mid repair.

Whats my character limit for a reply here?

Why did I have to download sound assistant to listen to audible with Spotify as ambient background music? Why did the last update brick my phone (S21 ultra) and require hours of tedious file transfers through USB-C to save my data?

Why do I have a feeling modern tech companies conspire to frustrate users as much as possible. Is it so when they get wrapped up in the next scandal they have an easy out? Fix some small self imposed inconvenience and win back the masses?

Why did Google wait this long to kill ublock origin?

I say all this but android is still the best phone OS I've tried. What other phone let's you setup a macro app to play/pause both Spotify and audible at the same time. And I can listen to both thanks to the availability of sound assistant through good lock. And I can even simply press a button on my watch to do the same play/pause for both apps thanks to yet another macro. And I can set it up so if my Bluetooth earbuds are not connected any accidental presses of the physical activation button on my watch won't play/pause. I can even use theme park to change the appearance of the UI entirely.

I know android / Google / good lock are all separate entities. But the fact they all work in tandem is something to marvel at. I just don't get why Google tries so hard to make me not like them. Why does good lock push updates with no changelog. Why is anyone still reading this reply when the answer to your question was 10 paragraphs ago?
