I want to transfer all my SMS messages from my old Samsung Galaxy S3 with Android 4.4.2 to my new Moto G4 with Android 7.0 and there are a hundred apps in the Google Play Store that will do this for me. But it seems that all of them at one point have a step where you change your default messaging app to whatever app you're using to backup and restore. I haven't actually done it, I'm just looking at the YouTube videos.
I don't want to change my default messaging app to one that I suspect will have ads. I can backup my SMS messages on the Galaxy S3 just by selecting all and backing up, but I get a message that MMS and group messages will not backup. The third-party apps allow this, but again I am reluctant because I suspect that I'll then start getting messages to upgrade to the paid version of the app, etc.
Is there a way to backup and restore all messages including MMS and group messages just using Android features and without downloading a third-party app?
