AC Question

OK, I'm in Trinidad and Tobago visiting family. I want to call back to the States using Wi-Fi. Which is free to do. When I arrived here, my Nexus 6 had no network provider. I had to search and connect to a provider. The other day we had Wi-Fi connected in the home. Now I want to disconnect from the network to ensure I'm making Wi-Fi calls only. Reason is because I don't see the Wi-Fi symbol next to the phone handset when I attempt to make Wi-Fi calls. This should be simple to do. My wife's Galaxy 5 allows you to disconnect from the network using Wi-Fi only with a simple toggle switch. Awesome. But I've realized in my time using the Nexus 6 that many things aren't simple or convenient at times. I'm looking for a solution to this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Android Central! Is your wife using her actual mobile plan to make wi-fi calls, or is she using Hangouts Dialer on wi-fi only? I'm not sure, but I think you still need to have your voice signal turned on in order to utilize wi-fi calling through your mobile carrier. For example, on the Sprint support site, it states that any phone prior to 2016 can't use wi-fi calling if you're on Airplane Mode (although apparently it does work on phones released in 2016): http://support.sprint.com/support/a..._calling/173e331f-8423-453e-93cb-4688f6a91f67

As a workaround, you could instead try turning on Airplane Mode (which shuts off the cell radio), then turn on wi-fi and use Hangouts Dialer to make the call over wi-fi.
