How can I use text messaging for a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, my provider is AT&T. I have a SIM card in the Tab with 4G capabilities and it seems to have its own phone number. The hangout app will not work, but i feel there must be another way to use text messaging for my tab 4 if i have my own number and a paid for provider.
