will the slimport - hdmi cable work with 2012 nexus 7
No, the 2012 model was not built to support any kind of HDMI output.

Ditto on Slimport! Chromecast and Miracast are too limited. Slimport works with everything, video players, streaming, games...
But 'icwhatudidthere' is right; a few apps don't support 'video-out', so Slimport won't work with those apps. No adapter will, for that matter.
Luckily though, only very few apps don't allow video-out. Mostly its just the stingy Cable TV apps like Time Warner Cable, HBO, and Showtime, etc.
BTW, last I checked, they were almost impossible to get on Amazon. And when they were available, they were somewhere around $35 to $50. They have other, cheaper brands, but judging by the reviews, they're crap.
Your best bet for a Slimport adapter is eBay. I got a genuine Slimport for $16 and it works fantastic. There's a lot of knock-offs out there, so I'd look for a seller with excellent feedback.
Welcome to Android Central! Have you read through the preceding posts? They all confirm that by using a SlimPort microUSB-HDMI adapter like this one (Amazon.com: SlimPort? SP1002; Connect mobile devices to any big screen. High Speed micro USB (male) to HDMI (female) connector cable (4.26cm x 2.21cm x 0.99cm)-Supports Full HD and 3D at 1080p @60Hz, 24bpp: Electronics), you can hook up your 2013 Nexus 7 to an HDTV using an HDMI cable (which is the type of cable you need for high def signal). However, the 2012 Nexus 7 (i.e., the 1st generation) does not have SlimPort capability, so this won't work on that model.
One way is to go to Settings -> About tablet and look at the Build number - then compare it to what you see at https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/imageshow can I tell if it is 1st. or 2nd. generation
I have Nexus 7, how can I tell if it is 1st. or 2nd. generation, it was a Christmas gift in 2012. I would like to stream live TV through a Slimport to main TV
Thanks
