How did I keep google widget from opening a new instance every time I use it?

Silly question but I feel like there has to be an answer. I use the Google widget on my phone all the time (Moto X Pure, Marshmallow) and hate how it always opens up new instance every time I search for something. Is there anyway to prevent this? Would make using my recent app button a lot better and like it used to be.

Welcome to Android Central! The multiple instances of Google Search in your Recent Apps list doesn't mean that your RAM is getting overly cluttered with duplicate apps. Recent Apps shows what apps you've used or what you've searched for recently. There isn't any way I'm aware of to consolidate Google Search tabs in Recent Apps. One workaround would be to use Chrome to search instead (as long as you have the Merge Tabs and Apps option turned off in Chrome).

It will open up in a Chrome like browser then you can go back to the search. You have to set it as the default browser for it to work.
