Phone: Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T
Platform: MIUI Global 12.5.5 Stable
Android 11 RKQ1.201004.002
Android security update 2022.05.01

The phone was asleep in my top shirt pocket when I noticed the torch was lit up. I took the phone out and entered my phone PIN to wake it up and was able to switch the torch off again in the Notifications pull-down. This has only happened once and I have not been able to replicate what I may have done to switch the torch on whilst asleep. There are no ‘Torch’ apps installed and the Camera ‘Pocket Mode’ is switched on to prevent touch-gestures working whilst in a pocket. The 'Turn on Torch' setting is set to 'None' to prevent any actions/gestures/presses from switching the torch on.

Q1 - Can anyone tell me how this happened so that I can try to avoid it happening again?
Q2 - How to switch the torch back off again without having to wake up the phone?

Thanks in advance.

Can't say for sure, but on my Xiaomi there are 3 different areas in Settings that relate to the Torch.

Additional Settings - Gesture Shortcuts - Torch

Button Shortcuts (don't know where this is in overall Settings but there's a link at the bottom of Gesture Shortcuts) -

Special Features - LED Light, for various notifications. Reading the last item it may be an individual app that was allowed permission. IDK

I have a Poco now on MIUI 13

Thanks, but none of these apply to my phone and 'Turn on torch' setting is set to 'None' so no actions should turn it on except doing it manually. Maybe it was a random glitch that switched it on.

It hasn't happened again so I reckon it was a random glitch. I'll call this thread ended as far as I am concerned.

I once walked round for an hour with the torch on in my pocket. In my case it was because I’d been using it, and forgot to switch it off. That was on a newish iPhone. Nothing bad happened.

It would however be useful on all phones if some kind of auto turn-off could be devised.

Thank you but I'm sure that I hadn't been using it. I agree that the torch should auto-shut off after a set time.

Maybe a gesture setting? Similar to this one on my phone. I can turn the flashlight on by drawing a v on my screen when the screen is turned off.

Sometimes being in pants or shirt can cause accidental touch on the screen so maybe move the torch to different page in your pull down notification panel and dee if still happening
