How do I access my group contacts in Google's Messages app for Android?

I am using Google's Messages App for texting. I can find no way, from within the app, to send a group message using the groups I have already set-up in my contacts. Is there some way I am not aware of?

The only way I can find is to select the group in my contacts and then send the message from there. But that is indirect, an inefficient round-a-bout way. Any help would be appreciated.

This has been a long-standing deficiency. The way you describe is the best way to do it, short of installing a 3rd party app.
