How do I activate music controls on S9+ Led cover

I have Galaxy S9+ with the Samsung S9 LED cover. The cover correctly shows LEDs for incoming calls, batery charging etc. It also shows the graphic equalizer LED sequence when the cover is closed and music is playing. However I do not get the Play/Pause Skip LED indicators to control music.

I have tried the cover with Google Play Music and Samsung's Music player.

How do I get this to work?

Also, I'd also like to be able to control BeyondPod podcast player this way, it does show the equalizer sequence when the cover is closed.

You would not believe the number of review videos I watched where they did not show that.
