Question How do I avoid damaging my phone?

I am a very careless phone handler. I have destroyed my Samsung A30 in last 5.5 years. My power button doesn't works. I have dropped my phone 3-4 times last year. My battery drains quickly once it goes below 27-28%. I feel I should not be using a smartphone.

I want your advice on preventing hefty repairs for smartphones.

These are the issues I fear the most :
1. How do I avoid dropping my phone? I once dropped my phone last year which required screen replacement.
2. What should I do to protect my display from damage not related to falls?
3. How do I keep my phone battery healthy?
4. How do I avoid phone buttons being dysfunctional?
5. How do I keep my charging port clean?

Are there anymore issues I should be aware of?

5 and half years, is pretty impressive for keeping a device. I feel like the answers are right there in your statements. Drop & fall protection, button health, and even a clean charging port can all be accomplished by using a case. There really is no other way. can't hurt something wrapped in a bubble. can't hurt buttons that covered and protected. can't get much dirt in a port that is covered by cover most of the time. The same with the screen. Nearly any screen protector is better than going naked. A basic film protector will protect from scratches and even some drops. Need more protection, tempered glass protectors do a bit more.

If you're the type that wants the natural feel of the naked device, well the best advice would be get insurance. Until someone comes up with a magic spell that doesn't allow the phone to touch the ground, or a coin or key in your pocket, wrapping the device up is the only way.

What phone are you considering?

Next month, I will buy a phone which would be cheaper than my present phone.

Some user told me that screen protectors won't protect my phone against screen blackout. Only phone case would. I don't know what kind of phone case should I purchase? Some are more expensive.

I face a lot of attention lapses. I slipped on the ground while holding a phone in my hand due to which my phone fell down. It once fell from my pocket. I once dropped phone on the floor while holding it and I was standing.

I think we may have discussed this in another thread with you, but Otterbox has one of the best reputations for making really rugged and protective cases. The downside is that they tend to be pretty bulky (and pricey as well). Other good brands include Spigen, Incipio, and Speck. The thicker the case, the more protective it'll be in general. Reinforced corners can be helpful, since a fall on a corner means more concentrated force in a smaller point of contact that can be more destructive. I also like a good grippy texture, since for me, drops happen when I'm trying to take my phone out of my pocket and it slips from my hand -- look for a coarse texture, especially on the edges, since that's where you tend to grab a phone when taking it out of the pocket.

Tempered glass screen protectors are useful to prevent scratches, especially if you're in the habit of putting your phone in a pocket or bag with other objects that can scratch (like keys, coins, etc.).

A wristlet can be useful, especially if you have the phone in your hand a lot and have to do other things with your hands.. This typically requires using a case that also has small holes for a lanyard. When I travel, I usually swap out my case to one that has a wristlet, because I like to take a lot of photos on my trips while also handling other things, like looking at a guidebook or tour pamphlet.

There are no guarantees when it comes to protection and how delicate these devices can be. I saw a phone dropped on concrete survive unscathed and the same phone dropped on carpet end up with a broken screen. Some cases come with warrantees but nothing is perfect.

I assume you mean a broken display when you say screen blackout. Just as described above, no promises or guarantees. Sometimes the best we can do is be prepared.

There are things you can do to combat dropping your phone. Pop sockets are a popular choice for giving users something to hold onto to prevent drops. I also found and kind of liked the option below. If you're going to use a case the option below offers a way to attach a lanyard.

One tip I offer as a way of avoiding dust and other detritus being dragged or pushed into the USB port is to blow sharply into the port and into the USB plug before connecting.

As others have advised using a robust case will help to minimise drop damage. Consider one to which you can attach a lanyard to wear round your neck or fastened to your clothing (eg round the belt on your trousers).
