How do I backup a Note 2 with Android 4.4.2?

How do I backup a Note 2 with Android 4.4.2

I need to carry out a factory reset to remove a bug that is crashing clock, Facebook and Viber on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. First I need to back up to PC. I tried smartswitch but it seems to hang at 38% in middle of call log.
I checked web and Kies 2.6 is recommended for older devices such as Note 2 but not for newer operating system.
Is there a way of getting smartswitch to work. Should I try Kies 2.6 or Kies 3 or something else?

You can do this via custom recovery or Kies 3.
