how do I backup my hero?

Good question! I went through multiple Pre's and found the replacement process was pretty slick because of the "cloud". I found an app of the Hero called MyBackup Pro that looks promising. I've not tried this yet and it will cost you a few dollars but it looks like it would be worth the money.

If you search for "Backup" in the Market app you should find this app and some other options.

UPDATE: I purchased this app and tested the backup. It seems to be what (I believe) you are looking for. I backed up my applications, settings and contacts to the SD card. The contacts took a little while but I have over 500 so it really wasn't bad. The apps and other backups were very quick. I haven't tried to reinstall from a backup yet (I hope I don't have to) but this seems like it is a fit for your needs and could be a great app.

I exchanged my Hero today and used that app. For the most part it did backup and restore almost everything.

Some settings it didn't restore perfectly like some WiFi & calendar options. For some reason it didn't restore Pandora & its widget.

However, besides those little nitpicks, it worked wonderfully, restoring my bookmarks, scenes, history, texts, etc.

I definitely recommend it.

Why did you exchange your Hero? any major problems?

My earpiece was wacky, where every so often when i made or received a call i would hear a lot of static.

Also had a minor problem with the right side of the keys at the bottom of the phone, where they were creaky, and not as solid as the left side.

I could have lived with the creakiness, but since i had the static problem, i thought it was best to exchange it.
