How do i change my music volume from my phone's lock screen?

So when I wake up my phone to skips songs and such, I can't adjust the volume with the buttons on the phone, but when I turn the screen off I am able to do it just fine. I hate having to turn the screen off while changing songs just to adjust the volume without having to unlock it. Is there a setting for this? I need to be able to change this without rooting my phone if at all possible.
