How do I fix a "server error" with my Gmail account?

Galaxy S5 Phone running Android version M. This error message appears several times an hour/day. Yet, I'm still getting my gmails without "fixing" the problem. Suggests "https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833" but I don't see how the advice at this link applies.

Welcome back! What's the exact error message you get? Are you using the Gmail app, or the stock Email app?
