How do I get rid of "roaming is off" notification icon?

My S5 has been on Lollipop for over 6 months, on Boost mobile. The "roaming is off" notification icon with the red line through it (shown in the screenshot) recently appeared and despite a complete review of all my settings and an Internet search I can't figure out how to get rid of it

settings-networks- mobile network-- roaming- turn roaming switch on. (you only get the strike icon when switched off)
