How do I keep Google contact photos vs. FB photos?

Pulling my hair out on this one.

I spent the days leading up to June 4th selecting and adding photos to my Google contacts so that I could use them immediately when I got the phone. I also have Facebook set up on the phone.

For everyone who is in both contact lists, I have the links set (green) so that I only see one record for each. I have (multiple times) gone in and specifically selected the Google photo as the one I want to use for each person.

It looks like every time a person posts something to FB, their contact photo goes back to the Facebook one.

How do I default to the Google photo at all times? I turned off "Contact Syncing" for the Facebook account in the phone settings, but that doesn't do it.

Just got an EVO 4G and have this problem!

I DONT want to use people's Facebook pictures. Why won't Sense let me select the Google Account pictures!?

I've had no problem selecting Google pictures over Facebook pictures...

Here's what I'm doing, in case it's different than what you've tried so far...

I go to the contact and click on the "Link" in the top right corner, then click the photo in the upper left corner. Here is what it looks like after that:

After that, I just select the Google picture and click Done. It's stayed for me so far... Hope that helped.

I have a feeling this can't be fixed...well, not entirely. I had to turnoff contact syncing for facebook and google. This is crappy solution, but I think it is the only way. I have spent a lot of time messing with this and this is the only way it has worked for me. I've done it with only google sync off...only facebook sync off. I deleted the contacts entirely and started from scratch...nothing worked. My last resort was just to entirely turn off the sync features and now it works. What a shame it had to go to that.

EDIT: If you have twitter or any other thing syncing contacts, you may need to turn those off also. I don't use them, so I don't know.

Thank Google Contacts for that, not Android or the phone. Google Contacts saves all contact pictures at a measly 96x96 resolution.

There's gotta be some limitation the phone is imposing too though. Even the facebook contacts that are getting set by default are horrible resolution. I can go to the gallery and pick that same picture and it will fill the screen and be pretty. It's ONLY in the context of the picture while they call that it's so bad.

No, it was pretty god awful looking on my Pre as well, actually.

I found a relatively easy solution to this. The problem is that the phone displays pictures that have a high resolution and gmail doesn't. Facebook picture aren't too bad in my experience though...matters what kind of quality pic your friend took.

Anyway...

For people I deemed important enough, I created a new profile for them on my phone. When you create it, click the "phone" option. You don't need to add phone numbers or anything, just a name and the picture you want. Then you link it to the existing contact from google/facebook. Select the default picture to the phone profile one and you will have a great quality photo for the contact. It probably isn't the most ideal solution, but it works cause it takes the picture from the phone and stores it instead of uploading that photo to gmail (which gets compressed and sent back).

Hey guys... there are existing threads about the contact picture *quality* - can we keep this one to the picture *source* issue? (and yes, I realize they may be somewhat related, but not for my purposes)

@reagan247, yes, I have tried that... it only works for a short time (until the next sync after that person's next post from what I can gather... even with Contact Sync *off* for Facebook!).

To turn off the FB pics you have to turn of facebook for htc sense

In the phone settings --> Account Settings Under Facebook for HTC Sense, I have the "Sync contacts" checkbox *unchecked* - this does not appear to fix the issue. Are you suggesting removing that account all together and add the plain "Facebook" account instead?

Well, drat... I removed the Facebook for HTC Sense account and tried to just add the Facebook account. Nothing happened when I tapped on it, however. It would let me add a Twitter account (checking to see if unit locked up) but not a plain vanilla Facebook account. Did a power cycle and same thing - can't add the non-HTC-Sense Facebook account.

Thank you soooo much! This worked like a charm those blank faces of those not on fb since I could choose from my photos or camera files.
